Halloween 2001 -- Anthrax hits the Castro
Every year on Halloween, tens of thousands of people converge on the section of Castro street from Market to 18th in San Francisco, for one big street party. They come from far and wide, and they come in costume. This year, we sailed a little bit close to the wind, and went as a couple of guys in biohazard suits, carrying a six foot replica of the letter sent to Senator Daschle which contained anthrax. We knew it was in bad taste, but one very powerful way of overcoming fear is to turn it in to humour. And any initial apprehension we had was dissipated when the first people who saw it when we got out of the car raised a smile. Later on, even the policemen laughed. We counted a total of six people (out of roughly 150,000) who suffered from total sense of humour failure. We were a big hit...

Lots of people took pictures of the letter. If anyone reading this page has other pictures, please send them to me and I'll add them to this page.
